"you can also publish character achievements/status updates via Twitter (and a couple other Twitter-esque sites) from in-game, write bios/blog posts and even create comics starring your heroes via the MashOn service"

Yep, that's exactly the type of convergence that game makers will need to intentionally support. Facebook games have shown how much people value expression and sharing.

Social media is here to stay. And to the extent that MMORPG game developers figure out how to tap into it, they'll be successful in acquiring and retaining players.

This type of integration is a nice trend.

Champions Online is probably the most recent title I can think of that really pushes the envelope in this regard. Not only can you view any character's missions/equipment/level/etc. via the website, you can also publish character achievements/status updates via Twitter (and a couple other Twitter-esque sites) from in-game, write bios/blog posts and even create comics starring your heroes via the MashOn service.

It's a very cool way of offering players "more."
