SWTOR Smuggler Gunslinger PVP Video @ 16 in Voidstar

This is my first gameplay / guide video for the dual-wielding Gunslinger advanced class in Star Wars: The Old Republic. Gunslinger is the mirror class for the Imperial Agent Sniper, so the material covered in this video is relevant to players of either class.

This video provides detailed educational commentary on the core mechanic (Cover), PVP-related abilities, and analysis of match play in Voidstar.

To see me PVP’ing live, check out the streaming schedule on Twitch.tv. My stream features real-time narration and commentary – and to the extent possible interaction with the Chat Room.

EDIT (2011/12/13): make sure to read my article about activating Cover without a delay, if you’re seeing delays between the time you try to activate Cover and when it actually comes up.

    Good-day sir,

Let me first say; great vid! Some very useful info in there :)

I use exactly this build for warzone pvp. I am same level too. My problem is that I don’t seem to do as much overall damage as you. On a good day where my focus is dps I’ll do around 90k damage, i’m never the highest, but never the lowest either, usually in the top 3-4. I use pretty much the same tactics you do (maybe not quite as pro, but still), to the point where our quickslots look pretty much identical. I’m useful for keeping people off the doors (voidstar) and guns (alderaan), but in games where this is my focus I seldom go above 70k overall damage. 190k damage = not a chance in hell for me.

Maybe you are using better gear? At this point I’m just using the stuff I got on the the beginning planet, as I went straight to pvp warzones when I hit lvl 10. I have yet to find any vendors that sell much better gear, and yet to find any use for warzone commedations.

Any help would be much appreciated :)

Damage relative to the other opponents in the match is what matters.

Damage numbers will be higher for everyone for longer matches. That Voidstar ran for 14 minutes out of a possible 15, because it took time for the 1st attacking team to cap and the 2nd attacking team ran out of time.

My gear is mostly greens with a few blues. Nothing special.

I buy most of my gear from the AH, and I sometimes turn in the 50 PVP credits (can’t remember what they’re called) to get the box with PVP consumables plus 1 random piece of gear.

Thank you for the quick reply. I’ll have to check my the damage of my ‘charged burst’ and ‘aimed shot’. I’m pretty sure they are somewhat lower on my build, which probably accounts for some of the difference.
I know that damage numbers will vary from game to game. I’ve done nothing but PVP warzones from level 10 to 16.So I’ve seen em’ all (well mostly), including the 15 min voidstar. I’m generally pretty stable at 80k’ish damage no matter the circumstance or map. I would just like to break the 100k barrier every once in awhile, and the 190k just blew my mind… Then you went on to talk about doing 200k at lvl 11-12’ish :D
Anywho, I’ll check for some better gear once I get online again. Also you just earned yourself another sub on youtube, grats ;) Watching commando pvp now… great stuff!!

Gunslinger is great! Totally an underestimated class. At level 20 you get hunker down, makes you immune to all crowd control for 20 seconds, its beautiful. Curious to see what you have to say on sharpshooter talent build when you get to the higher levels. Thanks for the great guide.

Immunity from CC for 20 seconds? That’s an eternity in PVP.

Great video as usual. I was wondering if you and your guild have chosen a server to roll on at launch, and if you haven’t chosen yet will you announce where you are going before launch?

P.S. Sorry if this has been mentioned/answered before, I had a quick look and didn’t see it.

      Server list hasn’t been announced.

We won’t announced publicly where we are until after the game is launched.

Great video. Glad to see your added contribution to Gamebreaker. This is the most well put together video commentary of a PvP scenario I’ve seen. I love the little pop-ups on the left that give you tips as you commentate. Keep it up!
Oh and I look forward to seeing a consular sage healer video if you ever get around to it, as I am curious as to how well they would do in Warzones.

Mr. Ed Park; I watched a video of you doing pvp with your sentinel and during the following beta weekend I noticed a huge improvement with my own pvp even though I was not playing a melee class vs the previous beta weekend when I played a Sith Marauder. What you have to say about recording your play sessions and then reviewing them makes a lot of sense after watching you and the informative commentary you provide. I’ve already posted a link to your twitch page on several forums for those with “viability” questions and I can only hope that more viewers will find you and help support you. You deserve it.

    • rowandax says:

Ughh replying to my own post…But there wasn’t an edit button….As far as Gamebreaker goes, you are doing this for a living and if they want a piece of your 150k+ views you need to work out a deal. You’re trying to do this for a living and as I’ve heard you state, you used to own your own company. Well, as good of friends they may be you still have to eat my friend. I look forward to to seeing you in game.

  9. Taugrim,

Excellent video as always. I started watching your videos about 6 months or so ago with Rift, and have been watching you on Game Breaker TV as well. I wanted to drop you an e-mail to ask you a few things, but didn’t see anything on here that would allow me to do so. If you have the time, would love to hear from you.

Awesome work as usual. Keep up the fantastic work.

hey taugrim can u tell me something- does imperial agent have any aoe attack that can take hidden out of hide? cause i am having a problem in 1vs1 with rogues- if they get the first blow i am as good as dead- plus i cant say that ia is a good class for 1vs1 as u need to be in cover and u also need ur enemies to be kinda far… melees easily close gap..

I know this is an old post but recently I started a gunslinger that reached 22 yesterday … I was doing ok damage in PvP about 120k game and 5 medals but I always thought I could get a better number without ” playing for the damage” I mean being the top damage without sacrificing teamwork…. I remembered your video and decided to give it a try …. Turned out that today I did ~150k damage and 7 medals in the last 4 Warzones … Still a long way to reach 190k but it’s a start ….. I was wondering if you have any more tips like do you focus on staying alive or doing the most damage before dying? What classes do you target first? Do you use vital shot ? ( for me is pointless unless you want to keep someone from destroying the door for it’s duration) anyway thanks for the help and hope to getting more gunslinger action

Well there was something I wasn’t doing in the video you should be doing: putting Sabotage Charge on the target before AS / CB. The delayed burst creates spike damage that is hard to heal through.

Vital Shot is good against high Armor opponents and targets that may take a long time-to-kill. It’s also great for preventing a node cap as you said.

I generally target non-tanks first, but if a target is low, I’ll switch to them. That’s one of the benefits of playing a ranged nuking class – you can watch the action, panning the camera as you nuke, and see opportunities to drop opponents.

The key for putting up high damage numbers is uptime. While it may sound counterintuitive, if you are good at picking off low health targets, you stand a better chance of being alive to kill the remainder that are still alive.

I see …. I’ll review some of your videos and hopefully achieve the 190k damage mark …. I just can’t stand vital shot … It messes my energy management and it looks like a charged burst over time…. One more thing , do you think quick aim talent ( sharpshooter tree third row ) is worth taking cause I found out it very useless

Nice video, except you’re (in my opinion) giving out bad information. Popping cover in place isn’t always – or even usually, if you have the “gumby” option – your best bet. It’s great for if you need to drop where you stand and deliver some serious punishment instantly, but it comes with a huge glaring “hey, here I am! I have lots of DPS I’m about to use on you!” shield and flashing lights.

Hard cover furthermore gives vastly better protection; if your opponents have green shields over their heads when you’re in cover, they literally cannot shoot you if you stay passive behind the cover, and you’re also protected from being jumped on by force using jump-attack types. Even when using the flashing lights cover you should try to maneuver so you have that PLUS hard cover between you and your targets, if at all possible. Otherwise all you get is 20% damage reduction.

You can enter Hard Cover (i.e. behind an object) from Take Cover or Crouch.

You gain a 90% boost to Ranged defense while being in Hard Cover *but* only while you are doing nothing. Once you start firing, you expose yourself and lose the Hard Cover benefit.

      Frost :

you’re also protected from being jumped on by force using jump-attack types

You don’t have to be in Hard Cover – Cover prevents opponents from charging you, regardless where you are.

      Frost :

      Incorrect.

Cover for Gunslingers and Snipers gives 20% Ranged Defense, which is avoidance not mitigation.

Look on your Character Sheet Defense stats while in Cover as GS or Sniper, this is easy to verify.
