RIFT Cleric PVP Video: Volume 3: Justicar / Shaman @ 35

This HD video is narrated PVP footage of my level 35 Cleric in RIFT Patch 1.3 in a Black Garden warfront (queued solo).

Here is the 26 Justicar / 20 Shaman / 0 Warden spec:

Single-target DPS macro:

#show Bolt of Radiance
suppressmacrofailures
cast Glory of the Chosen
cast Jolt
cast Fated Blow
cast Lightning Hammer
cast Strike of Judgment
cast Bolt of Radiance
cast Sovereignty
cast Waterjet

EDIT (2011/08/08): I’ve decided to put Bolt of Radiance and Sovereignty below Strike of Judgment. They hit harder than Strike of Judgment (even with the Vengeance of the Winter), but as they are ranged attacks they do not benefit from the 5% Melee Crit bonus and can’t proc the mana regen from Endless Winter. Also, Lightning Hammer deals excellent damage and I want to save the Light-based cooldown attack spells for whenever I am out of melee range but still need to build convictions and deal damage.

The only Shaman GCD ability I have in the macro is Lightning Hammer, as it is the only DoT the spec possesses and it delivers Air damage, so it synergizes with Stormborn. I decided to leave Massive Blow out of the macro, because I am not using Crushing Blow (it doesn’t generate Convictions), and therefore I am able to use Massive Blow only once every 15 seconds.

AOE macro:

#show Even Justice
suppressmacrofailures
cast Glory of the Chosen
cast Jolt
cast Fated Blow
cast Even Justice

Righteous Mandate / focus macro:

#show Righteous Mandate
suppressmacrofailures
focus
cast Righteous Mandate

Mana regen macro:

#show Purpose
suppressmacrofailures
cast Purpose
cast Ageless Ice

Self heal macro:

#show Glory of the Chosen
suppressmacrofailures
cast Glory of the Chosen
cast Doctrine of Bliss

Healing Spray macro:

#show Healing Spray
suppressmacrofailures
cast @mouseoverui Healing Spray
cast Healing Spray

Please post any questions / feedback.

P.S. let me know what you think of the audio quality of the narration. Is it any better / worse than my previous Cleric video? I am testing some new equipment.

Great video as always. The sound is better. It sounds a little more “crisp”.

I hope so, I’m using a new Blue Snowball mic and Shure pop filter.

Cleric’s now level 40. Only 10 more levels to go :) Although I’m almost out of rest XP.

    Hi,

    thanks for the insightful video!

I think to go deeper into Justicar is the way to go – healing seems to scale better than DPS with this build. Are you planning to go deeper into warden? Surging Rapids has a nice synergy with the doctrines…

    • taugrim says:

Putting more points in Justicar will not increase healing throughput per se, although there are talents which may improve survivability in PVP, such as Devout Deflection.

I’ve found that 26 points in Justicar and 26 points in Shaman are good investments – to reach Reprieve in Justicar and Battle Charge in Shaman, which are both spec-defining abilities.

E.g. here’s what my talent point investment looked like at level 39:
      http://rift.zam.com/en/stc.html?t=00rne.euMoogozo.Ved0tMz0z

For the 3rd tree, I am considering putting ~10 points one of these trees:
      – Inquisitor
      – Sentinel
      – Templar

Inquisitor and Sentinel have the 2nd level talent to increase Crits by 20%, and as you pointed out Warden has Surging Rapids will would buff all Justicar heals. Decisions decisions!

    Taugrim,

I’ve been looking for a way to contact you via e-mail but haven’t found one. Please contact me at my e-mail: todd@gamebreaker.tv

I am very interested in talking to you.

Thank you very much in advance.

    Best,

    Todd

I have read alot of you work and find them to be closeto, if not the best guides that i have come across. Your very clear in getting your points of veiw and Interesting ideas explained. I also really like that you are in depth in subject but still able to let us understand the topic without losing me.Also your videos really rock .I like that you start them as lower levels and progress up .Keep up the great job .

  5. Excelsior says:

I find Sentinel is the most useful for me. I generally invest 16 points for healing invocation, macro it with Touch the Light for a powerful instant heal. You also get healing breath another excellent instant heal 20% Crit/heal damage and Quietus, a 5 second silence. Downside is that you do lose Battle Charge. However when you reach 50, this build will not be a DPS build. Most of your damage will come from Even Justice spam in crowds. It simply doesnt have the killing power in 50 brackets. It does give good survivablity and raid healing.

    • taugrim says:

I really want to have at least 26 in Justicar for Reprieve and 26 in Shaman for Battle Charge. Both abilities offer a ton of utility.

That would leave 14 for Sentinel, which after reading your post and thinking about it seems like a solid investment to get the root abilities up through Touch the Light. The main issue is I wouldn’t have the Dispel, but every spec is about tradeoffs.

  6. Hreulfgar says:

How do you set your friendly flag carrier as a focused target? Noticed you have 3 target windows (default, target of your target); how do you get the third? I assume an interface setting however I do not see it.
    Thanks

  7. Frizzle says:

    Audio sound better definitely.

  8. sir.. a good melee healer is priest or cleric ?

  9. Matias says:

Hi Taugrim, nice vid. Do you think justicar/shaman would be viable in 40-49-50 pvp??

    • taugrim says:

Justicar/Shaman was viable in 40-49 PVP at level 40-41 for me in Patch 1.3.

1.4 just went live, haven’t tried playing yet.

  10. Paul Crowder says:

Your post/video has given me a new outlook on my level 50 Sham/Just. I was using a 33/33 build for a while, but I found the damage to be frustratingly low (unable to get many killing blows was a really frustrating point.) I’ve since tried to go with heavier Shaman builds, but those also have not worked, as I didn’t have the durability.

Maybe I can have more fun working as more of a support role, and ignore Shaman skills like RotN and Brutalize.

I also liked the idea of adding some points to another tree. I like warden: insta-cast AOE HoTs, the cleric’s best pushback, a CC breaker, and a passive HoT when receiving a critical hit. However, it only requires 13 points, so there is one point that won’t be too incredibly useful anywhere else. Maybe increase the hits on even justice?

    • Paul Crowder says:

Oh, forgot to mention the insta-cast damage bonus and heal bonus. And looking at it closer, you can increase your armor for even more survivability if 4 hits on even justice is enough!

I am planning on not taking Rage of the North. While it’s a fun ability to have, my priorities are:
      1. staying alive
      2. healing
      3. DPS

26 points in Shaman feels like a good stopping point for a support build, and with that many points in Shaman you can still output functional sustained and burst damage, whereas many pure Cleric healing specs output low damage.

Investing that extra point for Even Justice is a worthwhile investment. I just stopped at 2/3 in Vengeful Justice to get to Reprieve as soon as possible. Even Justice synergizes great with the mechanics for this spec:
      – with a Crit on any target, Jolt becomes available and the mana cost of Even Justice is nearly refunded from Endless Winter
      – with a lot of targets hit, you get solid Reparation healing

    Hello Taugrim

I just started Rift, and i’ve got a level 19 cleric, thanks to you… I did not knew anything about this game, quitted Wow 3 years ago and did not play any mmo since. I stumbled upon your blog, and watched all your videos, those of the warrior and then the cleric’s, and it inspired so much I bought the game online without even testing it since I was on holidays and only had a iMac with me ^^ I started playing 1 week after buying, and i’m not disappointed at all :-)

So thanks a lot for your guides, your videos, which explains very clearly how to play, even when I did not played at all before. The HD quality and sound is good too.

Sorry for my broken english, i’m not a native speaker.

I’m definitely looking forward for more !

    Baptiste

    • taugrim says:

      I’m glad you’re enjoying RIFT :)

Your English is excellent, I wish I could read/write in another language as well as you do with English.

  12. Practice says:

    Hi Taugrim

    A few questions.

I know this is a little unrelated, but when do you think you will be returning to your Warrior? If not, will you be updating any of your builds and posting new info on your War anytime soon?

Looks like you’re having fun with cleric, I’ll be checking back here all the time to see how 50 pvp goes for you. I’ve just get my war all the R4 gear and starting to really feel more like I did when I was in the 40-49 bracket. I think cleric might be my next char at some point.

    Best Wishes,
    Practice

    • taugrim says:

I do plan on playing my Warrior and when I do so I will post about it, but I’d like to get my Cleric to 50 ASAP as my current guild is on Guardian side on Sunrest and playing with them is my priority. Unfortunately my Warrior is on Defiant side and there is no faction transfer AFAIK.

  13. Atlus says:

    Hi taugrim!

I was wondering if you know Warden’s 1tier skill ‘Destructive Tide’ stacks with Justicar’s Strike of Judgment or Shaman’s Crushing Blow? Cause the skill says ‘Increase damage of your instant cast spell, not sure if those 2 skills are stackable..

    Best Regards,
    Atlus
