Powertech / Vanguard 50 PVP Video: 4/6/31 All-Out DPS Spec

This video covers the 4/6/31 “all-out” DPS PVP spec for the Bounty Hunter Powertech and Trooper Vanguard advanced classes in Star Wars: The Old Republic (SWTOR). Vanguard and Powertech are mirrors so this video is applicable to players of both classes.

Here is the spec used in the video:

This spec synergizes around the strong offensive capabilities of the Pyrotech (Assault Specialist) tree, in particular the mechanics for Rail Shot (High Impact Bolt) and Elemental damage.

I queued solo for the Alderaan match in the video as a 52 Valor Rank Vanguard with 8 pieces of Champion gear.

For PVE and Raiding do you reccomend your 4/6/31 or stick with the 2/8/31?

  4. Vimy says:

    Hi,

Was just wondering what you recommend in terms of leveling? Is leveling through IF build viable? If so, which tree do you go up first?

    Thanks!

The spec I recommend for you for leveling is whichever tree provides the mechanics that suit your playstyle.

      There is no correct answer.

If you want to level with Iron Fist, invest your first 21 points in the tank tree to get the charge, then go from there.

  5. WeaponGnome says:

    Taugrim,
Do you target with tab or by mouse?

  6. El'Rojo says:

Very nice Taugrim! I have been alternating between this and your Iron Fist spec and I am having a blast! Can’t say which I prefer, as it seems to be really what I am in the mood for that decides.

I do love all the protection medals that guard gives but as you point out, using taunts as often as possible should provide them and help out the team anyway.

Great video and extremely useful commentary.

    Thanks!

Yea the majority of Vanguards and Powertechs (and other tanking classes) do not leverage Taunts to the extent they should. This includes me as well.

    • Sam says:

If you are concerned with medals, you can always just put up Ion Gas Cylinder for a few minutes and get them. 2k takes maybe 30 seconds in any kind of decent fight, and 5k only a bit longer. 10k is obviously much harder (esp if you aren’t geared very well or not carrying a shield generator you can pop in), so if you die before it pops, I’d probably just settle with the 2 free medals. Combined with Shockwater, that will get you a reliable 10-12 medals on any map. (assuming quick kill, assassin, 2.5k hit, 10 kill, 25 kill, and 75k damage are easy). 300k will depend on gear, and how long it takes you to get your protection medals. 1k Defender is somewhat map dependent. Easy on Alderaan, medium on Huttball, next to impossible on Voidstar, and 3k is pretty difficult anywhere but Alderaan).

I remember posting this build to you way back, glad to see it got some attention. I love the spec and I use it constantly. Now it’s even better with 4x Rakata bonus (+8% dmg to Railshot). I am running PVE gear with PVP gear just for the bonus and I sit on 450 expertise, hit on 100% and loads of surge. Here is one picture how my damage done usually looks with my BH PT on Pyrotech build after warzones:

Now days I have also learned how to use my taunts more effective for few more medals.

did u ever do the math for dps between 8/6/27 and this 4/6/31 build? i remember on ur “lvl 50 specs” vid there was a guy and u discussing the pros and cons between the 2. i wonder if u ever came to a conclusion about that.

  9. fireshooter says:

Great spec! Which gear would you recommend using with it?

  10. Testy says:

    Another great vid, Taugrim!

You mention taunts are off the global cooldown… what other significant spells are off the GC? Has bioware printed a list for all of the Advanced Classes? It strikes me that making the most of cooldown rotations is one of the essential keys to mastering PvP play…

    • taugrim says:

      Testy :

Taunts, interrupts, and defense reactives (e.g. Riposte)/

    Hi Taugrim

Big fan of your pvp segments I was wondering the Trooper Vanguard spec looks great for pvp but I have a level 15 Commando are they as effective in pvp later on?

      Short answer: yes

Longer answer: the playstyle and effectiveness you see at lower levels continues through to 50.

If you haven’t seen them, I have the following “lowbie” PVP videos:
      14 Vanguard
      20 Powertech

  12. Martin says:

One thing about the assault plastique, i’ve noticed it does not deal AoE damage, where the sticky nade does, so would you really say it’s worth using? been ages since i played on my commando, and as well as being commando and not vanguard i wouldn’t know wether or not it makes that much of a difference in choosing the talent or not. Either way, i sent a ticket about this a while back, and the response said they’d look into it.

Truth be told i haven’t done alot of research on this, i was just wondering if you had any insight on wether or not assault plastique is a good option.

    • taugrim says:

      Martin :

One thing about the assault plastique, i’ve noticed it does not deal AoE damage

The tooltip says it does. From what I remember it does.

      • Martin says:

Seems wierd, i went on my commando just after writing the last comment and tested it, in several situations where there were one or more enemies in melee range of the enemy targeted by Assault Plastique, the damage was still single-target only…

Tried a few Sticky nades aswell, just to make sure there was no “PvE-only” variable, the stickies however did AoE damage.

Unless this is a UI-bug where i simply don’t get the numbers to show, or even something happening just on my char, what would you say about the ability? Would it still be worth choosing, or worth using over sticky nades?

      • Martin says:

Can’t seem to find an edit function, sorry if i missed it, but i checked again now, and Assault Plastique deals no aoe-damage for me, this may be a problem only occurring to me, or it may be for commandos only.

Checked the healthbar of enemies in close proximity aswell, no difference there either, so not an UI-bug, unless for some redicilous reason it doesn’t affect their hp bars (far fetched, but bioware sure has made some wierd bugs appear with this game :P).

  13. Frank says:

AP and TD don’t deal AoE damage like ED/SG. However, they deal more single target damage. For PvP you want 31 Pyro, however for PvE the 28 Pyro build may be better.

  14. snowape says:

In a couple of your recent videos you use your interrupt on a Juggernaut’s Ravage. Shouldn’t you save that cooldown for something else? Ravage roots the Jugg for its duration. All you have to do is move out of the way.

  15. Ontel says:

Do you plan on running this spec from now on?

  16. Brian says:

Can you post a screen cap or something? Links to the specs are invalid now and I am just looking for the PVP DPS Spec for Vanguard (also for Sent and Shadow if you have them). Please email me if you can and thank you for all your guides, help and support!!!
