Taugrim Talks SWTOR: Episode 1: Pre-Launch Thoughts and Q&A

Today I launched the first “show” on my TwitchTV channel.

Here is the link to the recorded broadcast:

In this episode, we cover:

  1. The most frequently asked questions for me from Beta
  2. Schwag & Giveaway announcement
  3. Live Q&A and discussion

Please let me know what you think – positive and constructive feedback is welcome and appreciated.

I will be streaming SWTOR game footage (PVP and PVE) once I get into Early Access and my guild Irony gets sorted out as far as where we’re playing. You can expect a lot of ad-hoc streams this week, and hopefully by next week I’ll have a regular schedule.

Information about our guild is in the broadcast, so I won’t say more – watch the recording.

As discussed in the episode, my CafePress store is now up at cafepress.com/taugrim. Let me know what products I’m missing that you would purchase.

I’m going to order a t-shirt and hoodie tomorrow, just need to pick the designs / colors I want to wear.

  1. Ah cool I like to be first to submit a question for next show:)

Seeing how SWTOR doesnt support multiple specs, what do you recommend to people who need an optimised DPS spec for PvE raiding, yet want tactical flexiblity for PvP. I will be playing a DPS Juggernaut and I’m curious if the talent trees have enough depth to support two play styles in one spec.

Just so you know, for pure PVE raid DPS, I don’t know how strong Juggernaut / Guardian are. Their DPS seems fine for PVP and non-raid PVE, but I’m not sure about raid PVE.

At any rate, It will be hard to tell what the optimal specs will be, as there is no Combat Log currently. Not sure if / when CL will be in the game.

For the most part, PVE specs should work functionally in PVP in this game, but of course for pure PVP efficiency the talent investments to 31 in a given tree would likely look a bit different.

I am pleasantly surprised with how functionally designed the trees are overall in SWTOR. There really aren’t any craptastic trees.

I enjoyed your stream and being able to give us time to ask you questions and I totally agree. I never understood why people would favor one game over another. Although, they all have some similar qualities they all have different aspects as well.

Other than the beginning mishap with us not seeing you in the beginning of the show it was great. I know you are still learning and are doing an awesome job.

Also I feel like the big headset that you use seems better for sound compared to the one you started with on the stream earlier on/the one you usually use for the GBTV streams.

I love seeing your stream because it feels more down to earth and mature.

Thanks for all your great work!

Yea I can’t figure out why the stream wasn’t showing. It’s either an issue with XSplit or with TwitchTV, but I’m not sure what exactly the issue is.

I’m glad you and other people pointed that out, because it’s counter to what I would have expected.

The cheek mic is a high-quality condenser Samson SE10 microphone. The gaming headset I use is a relatively inexpensive non-condenser Plantronics mic.

Great show. I missed the live broadcast, but caught it as a Twitch.tv VOD. Will this be a regular (and regularly scheduled) show?

You seem to be one of a minority of video game commentators out there who are really offering thoughtful, critical commentary on games, not just fluff content. I really appreciate the time you take to make good content.

I was concerned that you don’t get any compensation when people (like me) watch the VOD’s. I would really like to support you, but I can’t afford to buy stuff from Cafepress right now. I’ll start saving my pennies though. Sorry if I’m messing with your revenue stream.

Haven’t decided yet. Today was a “pilot”.

Certainly once the game launches most of my streaming time will be me smashing faces in PVP or chill-leveling in PVE.

A show like this is a good format to discuss hot topics or other things (e.g. the first question I addressed in the most FAQs), so I’ll leverage this as makes sense.

      Thanks!

I’m trying to create differentiated, distinctive content.

My background is not in journalism or media, but as it is turning out, the skills I picked up in the business world have been helpful for what I’m doing now.

TwitchTV recently announced to their Partners that their VODs will play ads during the commercial breaks that the broadcaster triggered while live.

So I make money either way you view: live or on-demand.

Just watch the content. And point other people to it. That’s the best way you can support me.

*Only* buy Schwag if you can afford it :)

Keep in mind it’s a “giveaway” not a “contest”.

      Contests have some legal complexities.

Your previous post, you created an Anchor tag in HTML, but didn’t put anything in the Anchor.

You can just use an IMG tag instead.

I think the main difference is the mic positioning. The Samson appears to lay flat on the side of your cheek while the plantronics is away from your cheek and more in the path of your voice. With that positioning your voice will likely sound more muffled and bassy.

I wouldn’t be surprised if you are supposed to extend the mic out another inch or so, so that it is away from your face and has air between the mic and your lips, while remaining to the side to reduce breath noise.

No, but if you listen only you’ll miss the visuals and the chat window.

People have asked about podcast / iTunes but the majority of content I’ll stream is very visual in nature.

      • Salty says:

I listen to a lot of the VOD streams while working as if it were a podcast…then I can always tab over and rewind a little bit if I want to see what’s being referenced. Obviously it’s not optimal, but is a great way to still pick up some tips.

    Back of shirt quote:

“To backpedal is human; to strafe, divine.”

  12. Lahiri says:

The idea of the split screen between play and finger movement would be very useful, I think. Sometimes I feel like I’m playing twister with my fingers.

  13. I find the Razer Nostromo is excellent for long play sessions. Its ergonomic and has a nice hand rest allowing you to take pressure off of your wrist and forearm. My hands are small so it is a better fit than trying to crane around a normal QWERTY keyboard when im playing. if If you unbind the movement keys except for the Q and E, you get 13 readily accessible key binds.

    • Chapliin says:

Do you use this in combination with a Razor mouse? I have wondered if it would be productive to keep all movement (including strafe) keyed to mouse buttons. Currently have been using the Merc Stealth, but considering switching to the Nostro and a Razor mouse — Notro just seemed a little foreign at first.

I use the stock laptop keyboard and an inexpensive Logitech 2-button mouse with mousewheel.

Suggestion: Make a Taugrim PVP Republic guild for only those that pvp with you on your stream and or help contribute to the community you have just started.

I will find the largest PVP West Coast server and park some names there then make 10 and start the Taugrim guild and park it there waiting for you when ready if need be :P

I will have an army of crafting alts to help outfit all the level 10 pvp if you able to join that server when not on your main.

That’s a good suggestion, but I don’t have the time to manage / run a guild.

Also, I don’t want to set the expectation that I will be logging in regularly enough to be an “active” guildee.

      • MikeyDee99 says:

All good I will try and find a good RP-PVP server West Coast and not the one you have Empire on as I don’t like the possible cross-faction playing or allowing it from an RP stand point. Also anyone else willing to assist from this community is welcome to help keep the guild ready at launch. Need some Guild name suggestions. Something with Taugrim in it but RP or semi-RP for use to use.

Send me PM or grab me on twitch.tv chat this week of release and we can get this setup and ready for use.

You might want to think about ways to filter your chat to find questions. I really like the way Day[9] does his q&a’s and he is always promoting his friend who develops a lot of the tools he uses for managing the live broadcast chat; so he might be a good person to talk to. Ask him about his question grabber.

Did Day9’s friend implement a custom Chat / software solution? It sounds like it from what you are describing.

Great vid and commentary, as always Taug. Your breakdowns on the ‘science’ of good PvP play has me excited and more confident to try out PvP as well. At least I’ll understand WHY I’m getting pwned, which will help me get better. lol.

Watching your streams of your Sentinel during the Beta, you mentioned one of the big challenges you see for the Jedi Knight/Sith Warriors for PvP is their lack of a stun CC until lev 24. Just FYI – based on some talent calculators out there I’ve seen (so don’t know if completely accurate with launch), it looks like the Defense (tanking) tree for the Jedi Knight Guardian AC gets a stun that you can get as early as level 20.

    http://torguild.net/calculator/jedi-knight/guardian/?p=302221001000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000

Don’t know your thoughts on running the actual tanking talent trees for PvP, not just the ‘can tank’ class. Some of the tanking trees have some cool buffs and CC abilities that may do well in PvP, not just defense.

I noticed that when you were running your Vanguard Trooper spec’ed in the Tactics tree, I believe your friend that you were running with named “Pyro”-something was spec’ed in Shield Specialist and still got max damage and max defense (granted the only defense, but still) in some of your early matches.

Ya, the tanking tree looks quite viable and effective for PVP, I’m glad to see that :)

Pyrofoxius was running Assault Spec for his Vanguard – i.e. the DoT / snare tree.

All 3 trees in Vanguard/PT are viable, it just depends on what playstyle / capabilities you want to maximize.

  22. […] On the other hand: apparently all of the specs are viable, if Taugrim is to be believed (an authority if no one else is). That’s good, I get really tired of MMOs pushing shit builds […]
